Before removing a tree or vegetation in Langford, familiarize yourself with the City’s Tree Protection Bylaw (Bylaw No. 2117, adopted February 2023). This bylaw regulates tree cutting on private property and vegetation removal in designated environmentally sensitive and hazardous Development Permit Areas.
Before starting any work, contact the Planning Department to confirm whether your property is in a Development Permit Area. You may need a Development Permit. Exemptions are available for trees that are dead, diseased, dying, or hazardous to safety or property, but a certified arborist’s report may be required. In some cases, trees may need to be removed if they pose a risk to property or safety. 6 signs that it might be time to remove your tree can help you assess whether removal is necessary.
For trees on public property, the Parks Department oversees removals. Contact them if you have concerns about a tree near your property.
Protected Trees
What is considered a protected tree?
(1) ANY tree over 20cm DBH
(2) ANY tree located on municipal property
How do I measure the DBH of my tree?
Measure the diameter of the tree at 1.4m (4ft, 7-inches) off the ground. If the tree is on a slope, measure from the highest point of natural grade around the tree.
Diameter can be found by measuring the circumference at this point and dividing by pi (3.14)
How do I calculate the DBH of my tree if it is multi-stem?
The DBH of the largest stem shall be considered the DBH
Permits
Do I need a permit?
A permit is only required when you wish to remove a protected tree
How much does a permit cost?
There is no permit application fee
What can you prune without a permit?
You can prune the tree in any way, as long as you do not:
- Top the tree
- Remove up to 25% of the total canopy of the tree per year, or
- Prune it in a way that will cause the tree to die
Regular maintenance can help protect your trees from damage caused by severe weather. Preventing storm damage to your trees is an essential consideration, especially if your property is in a storm-prone area.
Replacement Trees
Langford does not currently have any bylaws regulating the planting of replacement trees.
