North Saanich

North Saanich’s tree canopy is vital for the health of the community and natural environment. The District’s new Tree Protection Bylaw, effective since October 3, 2022, balances protecting the tree canopy and offering flexibility to manage trees on private property.

If you plan to remove regulated trees in North Saanich, you must obtain a tree permit. Regulated trees include:

  • Trees with a DBH (diameter at breast height) of 20 cm or more.
  • Significant trees with a DBH of 60 cm or more.
  • Protected species like Arbutus, Garry Oak, and Pacific Dogwood with a DBH of 10 cm or more.
  • Trees in environmental or steep slope Development Permit Areas (DPAs).

After submitting your application, expect a 2-3 week review period before permit issuance. Fees vary based on whether your application is residential or development-related.
